The creature stepped closer to the man, close enough for him to make out small details. The thing was man-shaped, but with what appeared to be wings on his back. Not the feathered wings of a bird, but leather wings, like the bats in the wood. He was small in stature, but powerfully built. His head was bald, as was his chest. The creature smiled and Veron could see two fangs gleaming in his mouth. But it was the creature’s eyes that held the prince spellbound. Two glowing, pale orbs swimming in pools of tar, piercing, as if seeing into his very soul.

“This is nothing but another nightmare,” the Prince said in disgust. “One that will be over with the break of day. Then you and your fables will be gone.”
